CURRENT EVENTS ASSIGNMENT
DUE: Twice a month on a Wednesday, see schedule for due dates.
Why is it important to learn history? Students ask this question every day. It is important to learn history because history repeats itself. So it is necessary for us to learn about what happens in the past so we can learn from it and make a better future! This assignment will require students to find a current events article and reflect on it in writing.
Directions
1. Find an article that relates to SOCIAL STUDIES in the United States. Look through magazines, newspapers, and online sources for an article that interests you.
2. Neatly cut out or print your article.
3. Highlight important information in the article.
4. Using a separate sheet of paper (either typed or neatly handwritten), write one paragraph (5-8 sentences) summarizing the article. Briefly describe what the article is about in your own words. Copying someone else’s words and passing them off as your own is called plagiarism and will result in a grade of 0.
5. Write a 5-8 sentence paragraph about your reaction to the article. Some questions you might want to answer include: Why did you choose the article? How did it make you feel? What have we talked about in class that relates to the article? Who could benefit from reading this article and why? Do you think it’s important for kids your age to read this article? Why or why not?
